But is it really the “diet’s” fault? There are certainly dozens of diets that come and go only to resurface again over the years. Fitness guru’s found on late-night infomercials are all too willing to take your money with the promise of giving you a model’s body in six weeks or less using their simple and fun program for just twenty minutes a day three times a week! Over your lifetime you have probably tried more than one diet and may have even tried the same diet several times. Even with all these promises you see people, ordinary people, who have lost significant amounts of weight through dieting and exercising though not with any particular diet or exercise but using any one of the current diet “fads” or exercise machines on the market. Dieting does work and it has probably worked for you one or more times. People can and do lose weight on whatever their diets of choice is. It’s clear there’s no one perfect diet but rather each person has a diet that’s perfect for them and their body. For one person’s body it might be low fat and high carb, for another it might be low carb and high fat. The actual diet itself doesn’t matter nor do the specific exercises that you do. What is important is finding the combination of the right diet and exercises the you can and will do and that work for you. However, the single most important factor in determining your chances of success is in your mind and not your particular diet or exercise program. Your mental “game”, above all else, will determine your level of success. You must have a burning desire to reach your dieting goals, you must also create a plan, have faith in attaining that goal, review the goal frequently, and consistently overcome all obstacles until your goal is reached. Only once you’ve mastered your mental “game” can you be assured of successfully reaching your dieting goals. The mental factor may be the most important part of succeeding, but it is just the start. There’s one other factor most people do not realized about dieting and it’s almost as important as the mental game for long-term success. This one factor contributes more to your dietary and fitness failures than perhaps any other factor besides lacking a correct mental game. Dieting, which is setting and reaching a goal, is only the first half of the process. Once reached, your goal is not the end of your journey. It’s only the beginning of a new goal, the second half of your complete success. It’s kind of like going through school as a child. Each year you reached toward the end of the year when school was out and you had successfully completed that grade level. But there was always another grade level to complete. The other half of your “dieting” journey is now applying and maintaining what you’ve learned along the way to reach another goal: maintaining your new healthy lifestyle. This is not just for the short term but it is purposefully making a lifestyle change for a permanent improvement in your health and fitness. Only once you’ve realized that all permanent health and fitness changes in your life are really two parts, reaching your dieting and fitness goals and then maintaining them with a new ongoing goal, can you then come to understand that the most important parts aren’t the goals, it’s the journey to your goals. We should alter our skin care practices accordingly so we can properly protect our selves from the ever changing elements. Many do not know that our skin is in fact our bodies largest organ. We must understand that our skin is far more delicate than we may realize. Let us now take a closer look at how our skin is affected during the summer season when compared to the winter months. Seasonal skin care differences Normally the winter months tend to be much colder and much more dry when compared to the summer season when the heat and humidity levels are significantly higher. When our skin is continually exposed to the harshness of winter weather, our skin takes the brunt of this beating, becoming excessively more irritated, chapped and dry. Although the clothes we wear protect most of the skin on our body, many times we often forget to provide protection to our facial area. Don’t assume that just moving indoors is significantly better for your skin. With many people continuously running their home heating system and many also using dehumidifiers, we end up sapping a large portion of the moisture from the surrounding air. Now if we take a look at the summer months, the temperatures start to warm, our skin is now more exposed to the elements from the simple fact we wear less clothing. Next combine the warmer temperatures with the increased humidity levels. Our natural response to these environmental changes is an increased amount of sweat that our body begins to produce as it tries to cool it self off. The consequence of these environmental and bodily changes is that our skin starts to become much oilier and we also end up more prone to the formation of pimples and other skin blemishes. For many, swimming is a great way for us to find relief from the heat and easy way to cool off. However it is easy for us to forget that when we swim in a pool we are also exposing ourselves to harsh chemicals and when we go swimming at the beach we have to deal with the affects of salt water exposure which can lead to excessive dryness in our skin. How to protect our skin during the winter months It is important to use a sunscreen regularly regardless of what season it is. Many don’t realize that we are just as likely to sunburn in the winter months as we are during the summer. We should use a sunscreen and moisturizer combination or a facial make up product that has a minimum SPF rating of at least fifteen. Make sure you also protect your lips by wearing lip balm or a lipstick that includes sun protection. We should try and maintain a consistent level of moisture within our skin and in our home or work environments. We can add moisture to the air inside of our home by using a simple humidifier. If you do not happen to own a humidifier you can just place a metal pan filled with water near the radiator or what ever heat source you have near by. It’s a good idea to keep a few plants in your home or office since they naturally help to moisturize the surrounding air. As for adding moisture to our bodies, we can easily do so by using an emollient based soap, cream or lotion. Another simple thing we can do to help out our skin is to take shorter warm showers. If you use hot water while showering or taking a bath, you end up striping away your bodies natural oils. Taking long showers or bathes also causes us to lose even greater amounts of our natural body oils because we stay submerged in water for to long. If you take bathes frequently it would be wise to add a simple moisturizer to your bath water. We should attempt to reduce how often we our apply toner after using our facial cleansers. Only use a toner product that has no alcohol or a low level of alcohol content. We also need to gently exfoliate our skin using a simple washcloth or soft scrub in order to remove any dead skin cells as well as stimulate the formation of new skin cells. How to protect your skin during the summer months We need to ensure that our skin is receiving significant protection from the effects of the suns ultraviolet rays which contain harmful radiation. We can do so by simply applying a sunscreen product with an adequate SPF rating. We can also wear sun protective clothing which has been specifically designed to protect against UV rays. You should also seek shade whenever possible while outdoors. Lastly it is important to note that the sun is at it’s strongest, between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Anywhere between those hours is when we should take extra precautions for protecting our skin from the sun while outdoors. Our excessive sweating also means we have an over abundance of realize oils which can clog our pores. When can combat this by using a cooling cleanser containing salicylic acid to help keep any skin blemishes under control. We should also use cleansers containing eucalyptus or menthol extracts since they feel good to the skin and also help keep our pores clean and open. Here are a few more quick tips. After swimming we should rinse our body with cool water to remove any chlorine and salt residues. Apply a facial mask once a week to help deep clean our pores and assist the skin in retaining its natural pH balance. Water is very important for the entire body, as well as the skin. Every day we are taking in pollutants from the foods that we eat, and the air that we breathe. The thing is that each person is different, and may require a different amount. A simple rule of thumb is to take your body weight, divide that by two, and drink that amount in ounces each day. In other words, if your body weight is 150 pounds, you would take that number, divide that by two, and you would come up with 75 pounds. The 75 pounds now becomes ounces, so you would need to drink at least 75 ounces of pure filtered water per day. If you were working in hot weather, then naturally you would want to increase that amount to replace what is lost through perspiration. Foods That Promote Healthy Skin There are a number of foods that promote healthy skin, and we will cover a few here. Several types of fruit promote healthy skin, and the types to be considered are the many different berries out there. Blackberries, Blueberries, and Strawberries are high in antioxidants, as well as many other nutrients, and antioxidants are responsible for eliminating free radicals in the human body. Free radicals are very damaging to skin cells, and eating a diet rich in antioxidants will help your body eliminate the free radicals, thereby helping your skin remain healthy. Another thing that your skin needs for good health is essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids are responsible for promoting healthy cell membranes. The cell membranes act as barriers to harmful things trying to get inside the cells themselves, if you can stop these from getting inside the cells, your skin cells will be that much healthier. These fatty acids can be found in many types of food, one of which is fish. Many fish contain them, but one type in particular contains them in abundance, and that is Salmon. Eating Salmon two or three times per week will give you a good amount of these fatty acids, the health of your skin cells will improve. When your skin cells are healthy, your overall complexion will show that. Spinach, and other green leafy vegetables are also great ways to promote healthy, vibrant skin. Spinach for one has an abundance of vitamins, and the kinds of vitamins in spinach, as well as the quantity of each puts spinach into the super food category. If you are clogging your pores with an oily or greasy lotion, perspiration will not be able to occur as easily, and remember that your body needs to be able to perspire in order to rid itself of pollutants. Another concern many women have, especially those that are pregnant are stretch marks. Stretch marks are caused when your skin has to stretch farther than it is capable of. When you’re skin is hydrated and elastic it can stretch much further reducing the possibilities of developing stretch marks. Easy-As-Pie Knitting Gift Idea #4!

By Alice Seidel Without us even realizing it, November is quickly passing us by! If you are truly stumped as to what to give everyone this Christmas, fear not! I am here with some knitting suggestions. In my three previous articles, I have given you some ideas for scarves, ribbon bracelets, and placemats. Just these simple patterns, can be transformed into dozens of one-of-a-kind knitting creations! In fact, you could outfit the entire family and close friends, with some of the nicest gifts they will ever receive! And to add to our collection, this article will be about knitting baby washcloths. Usually, whenever we think about baby gifts, it’s off to the mall we go, to find the latest in infant accessories. But, did you know, you can knit your own baby creations? They will be as soft and cuddly as anything you can find in a store, and, best of all, will be made with love! Knitting baby items are just so easy to do, and so unexpected! Traditionally, when putting together gifts for baby, the first things you think about are layettes, blankets, and booties. So, now it’s time to expand on this theme. Whenever I knit anything for babies, I love the yarn to be soft and pliable. For washcloths, use a cotton yarn. They are totally washable, and will hold up nicely. In a few stores, I have also seen terrycloth yarn, which is another great idea for baby items. But, for the baby washcloths that I knit up, the cotton yarn is the best yarn to use. Sugar n Cream, Peaches n Cream or Cotton Tots are my recommendations for the best cotton yarn to knit with. Use a size 6 straight needle, and, really, no gauge is necessary. Here is the pattern: Baby Washcloth Cast on 37 stitches. Knit four rows. Rows 1 and 5 (RS): K5, *p3, k5; repeat from * to end. Rows 2 and 4 : P5, *k3, p5; repeat from * to end. Row 3: K5, *p1, yo, p2tog, k5; repeat from * to end. Row 6: Purl. Rows 7 and 11: K1, *p3, k5; repeat from * , end last repeat k1. Rows 8 and 10: P1, *k3, p5; repeat from * end last repeat p1. Row 9: K1, *p1, yo, p2tog, k5; repeat from * , end last repeat k1. Row 12:Purl. Repeat these 12 rows 4 or 5 times more, until desired length. Knit four rows. Bind off all stitches. There you have it, simple, yet very unique, and sure to please! And, with all the colors and color combinations, you will have a blast knitting washcloths for little nieces and nephews, your friends, and babies-in-waiting!
